After three years of working as a sound engineer at Red Gate Arts Society my time at the venue has come to an end. I’ve seen the venue’s sound equipment move from an analogue board to a digital one, and leadership of the sound team change once over as well. I’ve treasured every opportunity I had to work with performers on that stage, and often remarked that I felt it was one of the best jobs I’d ever worked. In celebration of the end of my time at the venue, I’ve compiled some data across the three years that I worked there.
Firstly to note, this data was sourced primarily with information from Red Gate’s internal calendar, with some supplementary dates taken from my work invoices and old show posters. This data is prone to errors, as sound techs at Red Gate sometimes cover shifts for each other without the calendar being updated to match. My first shift was on June 4th, 2022 (following a shadow shift on May 22nd, 2022), and was the third day of Music Waste with Teeth to Your Throat, Kill Michael, Jodie Jodie Roger, M01E, Lil_Babeee_4EVA, Outback, and Reliquary V performing. My final shift was on March 16, 2025 and was a documentary screening of “People Live Here” with the band Girlwife providing support.
I counted approximately 99 shows, possibly more, possibly less. Maybe we could just call it an even one hundred. Across those shows I worked with 237 different acts. It’s a staggering amount of people spread across the entire Vancouver music scene (and some bands from out of town too!). It certainly puts the true size of the scene into perspective.
I did sound for the following artists more than once:
- After The Fox
- Andromeda Monk
- Aridonis
- Autonomous Apes
- Belle Tower
- Bloom Effect
- Car Thief
- Dani Your Darling
- Dour
- Felisha and the Jazz Rejects
- Freak Dream
- Goats and Lasers
- Grimm
- Guile
- Jackson Ramsey
- Jacob Audrey Taves
- Jess Waters
- Kerub
- Lunchtime Band
- M01E
- Math Bat
- Moondoves
- Muppet Boys
- ?NUMB?DAME?
- Pale North
- Phuture Memoriez
- Rosemary Ginger
- Seeing Grey
- Shimbashi Station
- The Hausplants
- Tiger Really
- Tough Sell
- Wack
One particular artist ended up playing four concerts with me as engineer: Autonomous Apes. You should check out their music, I had a chance to play alongside them with Transistor Riot when they were just starting out and they’ve always impressed me. Six artists played with me as an engineer three times: Belle Tower, Felisha and the Jazz Rejects, Freak Dream, M01E, ?NUMB?DAME?, and Pale North.
A standout evening for me: June 5th, 2023, a Monday. Sundiver CA and Yungatita were performing. Unfortunately the show was somewhat lacking a sizeable crowd since both of those bands were visiting from California. In spite of this they both absolutely killed it. To this day I listen to a bootleg I made and mixed of Yungatita’s set that night. It blew me away. It was a real pleasure getting to mix a band that spoke to my taste like they did so well.
So, sayonara Red Gate! It’s been a fantastic experience to work with all of these artists and to bring each of these incredible concerts alive. I’m planning on continuing to working in the studio as a recording and mix engineer, so if you’re a musician in Vancouver reading this do feel free to get in touch and ask if I’m available to book a studio session. Helping to create fantastic music has always been my passion, and that’s not going anywhere. It’s been a wonderful journey working at Red Gate Arts Society, long may it continue to serve the Vancouver DIY scene faithfully.
